What’s Energy Leadership?

Become an Ideal Leader
… and Unlock Your True Potential

The only constant is change. We all experience changes in needs, expectations, the environment, relationships, careers, economics, business, time demands, and more.  There is no one formula that will allow us to effectively manage change, and even less information about how not only to survive, but thrive, in the face of change.

Change affects us everywhere and in everything we live for.  Today, the security we seek from the various aspects of our lives is no longer guaranteed on any level.  Whether you’d like to protect your relationship, the investment you made in your key employee, your financial status, or your family, you’ve worked hard to be where you are today, and you desire and deserve to know that all of your personal and professional efforts are secure.

To create an effective personal system for thriving in our ever-changing world, while also securing all you’ve worked for, you will need to become an ideal leader. To assist you, we have created…Energy Leadership.

Energy LeadershipTM is the process that develops a personally effective style of leadership that positively influences and changes not only yourself, but also those with whom you work and interact, as well as your organization as a whole.

Thanks so much for helping me continue to do what I love.

Make sure to share this post and win BIG!

With gratitude,

Monique

Kick Up Some Dirt

February 2, 2011

As a life-long dancer the first thing I picture when I hear the words “Kick up some dirt” is a person dancing wildly, no holds barred, on the beach, or at a backyard hoedown. Yet this month (and everyday, really) it can hold another meaning, one that signifies resilience, persistence and laser focus (kinda sounds like a dancer’s life as well!).

With still so much energy behind this new year–2011–and all of the ideas, excitement and light with which we christened it still tangible, I am questioning what it truly takes to get to where we want to go… to light up and deliver results.

What does it take and why don’t we always follow through?

In coaching with others about Energy Leadership we talk quite a bit about our default tendencies–those thoughts, beliefs, actions (and non-actions!) that we have either learned over time, or created to protect ourselves, which over the years have become entrenched into our psyche. Many times, unless we really look for them we don’t know they exist and that they hold us back. However, if we are the  introspective kind and have a good idea as to what and why we do the things we do, I would dare to claim that we have the high likelihood of really creating a breakthrough if we are truly committed to making it happen.

So, how do we build this commitment?

Yes, it is true that less than half of all individuals who create a new year’s resolution break them by month six, but I’m more interested in studying the smaller percentage who are “Fireworks,”  as Katy Perry would describe them, because not only do they NOT break their resolutions, they reach them, BIG TIME!  I love it in Katie Perry’s song, Firework, when she sings “Make them go Ah, Ah, Ah as you shoot across the sky!”

When others marvel at what you’ve accomplished (Ahhh!),

and even better, when YOU marvel at what you’ve accomplished,

you’ve done something not many do often.

Perhaps a quick poll can help shed some more light.

What would you say you hear more often from yourself and others?

  1. “Gosh, I just haven’t had the time or energy to work on my goal. Maybe tomorrow!”  – OR-

  2. “You’re never going to believe what I accomplished today! It took all the energy I could find, but I’ve got a fire in my belly!”

I’d love to get your feedback on this… a quick pulse of what you’re seeing out there. Please check in.

So, back to finding that commitment, as well as resiliency, persistence and laser focus.

What does it take to master them?

Consider this 5 step plan of action to get you on your way:

  1. Dig Deep.
If you haven’t spent much time looking within start now. Try it for one week. Simply keep a journal to track your actions or non-actions and the possible reasons behind them. What are your thoughts, beliefs, and fears related to them? What fires you up or waters you down and why? I guarantee you’ll know yourself better than you did 7 days prior.

Jack Canfield uses a great visual to signify all of those “default tendencies” we tend not to see. Imagine the tip of an iceberg above the ocean, now go below the ocean in your mind to uncover the larger part of the iceberg…the part we don’t see that’s at least 5 times the size of the tip. This part underwater, what we don’t see, is likened to our subconscious. Let’s begin chipping away at that massive obstruction and start living more consciously!

  2. Identify ONE Breakthrough Goal.
A Breakthrough goal is something that you normally would avoid committing to. It doesn’t have to be BIG or complicated, but something that will require you to get out of your box. Pick only one; this is key. Don’t set out to change your entire life. All Breakthrough goals are made up of many smaller goals, so consider creating a mind map of your Breakthrough goal. Pick that first small step to focus on and simply keep the larger goal where you can see it daily, off in the distance.
  3. Create a NEW Default. We evolve just as time evolves. Yes, habits are hard to break, but PLEASE break them if they are not doing you any good! You have the power to create a new habit…a new default tendency, one that will move you forward and will not define you. How do you create a new habit or routine? Bring it up from your subconscious to your conscious. Acknowledge it. Speak to it. Thank it for its service. Tell it it’s time to go bye, bye! Define your NEW habit, and bring it to life by giving it your undivided attention. LOVE on it!

My quote for the day from my Ask and it is Given card deck applies nicely to this: “Like learning to understand the basics of mathematics and then having the successful experience of understanding the results of their applications, once you have a formula for understanding your world that is always consistent, it will yield consistent results for you.

  4. Kick up some dirt! Yes, this is the hard part. You know where you want to go, you’ve dug out the unwanted from deep down and placed lots of conscious energy around your new normal. Now the work begins. Kick up some dirt every day. Would you go today without brushing your teeth or taking a shower (Ok…maybe you shouldn’t answer this. LOL!)? Your new normal needs to become a priority, just like your other routine activities. Define a way to hold yourself accountable.

Stephen Covey helps to lead the way in this thought via Habit 3 of this 7 Habits of Highly Effective People…Put First Things First! Make this a FIRST in your life to watch it truly become a new default tendency. This new habit will take you from dependence to independence, or self-mastery.

  5. Kick up the celebration! Revel in your accomplishments daily. Share your success, even if it’s only with your pet, the best of listeners! No goal achieved is too small. Creating an environment of excitement and joy helps to expand your energy field, therefore attracting back to you more of what you want and need.

Revel in the newness. The new year, new default tendencies, new successes.

Have fun with the process,

Monique

Chasing Light in 2011

December 31, 2010

As I enter into the New Year I can’t help but to reflect upon the one we are leaving behind. The risks. The excitement. The really scary moments. And those that made it all worth it. And, as most of us do each year as well, I look into the vastness of 2011 and wonder “What’s to come?” This BIG question reminds me of Luke Skywalker in The Empire Strikes Back, when he is in the swamp with Yoda training to become a Jedi. As he enters into the darkness of the swamp to practice his new skills on his own he asks the wise Yoda, “What’s in there?” And Yoda so “Zenly” responds, “Only what you take with you.”

Yes…the unknown that is 2011 can only bring what we take into it.

At this moment in his solo journey this message from Yoda becomes all the more clear to Luke as he has a vision of himself battling Darth Vader (our darkness, of course) and seeing himself as Vader.

So how can we apply this to our own experience of 2011?

Will you battle with your dark side and other dark forces, or will you step into the vastness of the New Year with light and lightness?

What will you bring with you?

Luke’s Light Saber never left his side and neither should ours. What is our Light Saber, you may ask?

Well, it can be many things. Consider these options:

  • Intentions
  • Positive Thoughts
  • Gratitude
  • Forgiveness
  • Humor
  • Laughter
  • Human Touch
  • Passion
  • Excitement
  • Focus and Hard Work
  • Affirmations

Another way our Light Saber can serve us is by helping us to stay on our path even when others want to deter us. In Star Wars, this is done humorously by Lea, Luke, and others, when they shut down C3PO, whose typical “negative chatter” drives them crazy. Do you have a few C3POs in your life who may have good intentions but drive too much fear and negativity your way? Yes, we can shut them off. It’s a choice. It’s that easy. We can thank them for their opinions and simply move forward with our Light Sabers as we’ve designed them.

How does your Light Saber work for you and how can you power it up in 2011?

In closing, we cannot experience what we don’t have or don’t see in ourselves. Take the time now to decide what you want to bring with you into the New Year. It’s a powerful ritual. Think about what you want to see and experience in 2011 and begin to bring it to life, leaving all the rest behind. With this Inner Force…our Light Sabers…this scary, unknown path will be illuminated.

May your light shine brightly for you in 2011, dear Jedi.

May the force be with you…

Monique

While reading Open by Andre Agassi I couldn’t help but see how clearly his life-long struggles so closely tie to the meaning behind our chakras (energy centers within our body). In fact, while reading his story I also devoured Truth Heals by Deborah King, which clearly depicts for us how the answers to almost every challenge or illness we have in our lives can be revealed for us within our chakras.

For those of you who have absolutely no idea what a chakra is, here is a fairly simple definition:

A chakra is believed to be a center of activity that receives, assimilates, and expresses life force energy.  Chakras are energy centers along the spine located at major branchings of the human nervous system, beginning at the base of the spinal column and moving upward to the top of the skull, through which pass 3 major energy channels. Chakras are considered to be a point or nexus of biophysical energy or prana of the human body.  Prana is the basic component of your subtle body, your energy field, and the entire chakra system…the key to life and source of energy in the universe. It is the six major chakras that correlate with basic states of consciousness.

Each chakra in your spinal column is believed to influence or even govern bodily functions near its region of the spine. Because autopsies do not reveal chakras, most people think they are a fancy of fertile imagination. Yet their existence is well documented in the traditions of the far east.

For the sake of this post, let’s leave the definition at this. I do encourage those of you who are interested in reading more about chakras to visit this link and simply enter “chakras” into the book search category: http://bit.ly/9EuwlC.

Now, back to Andre Agassi and Open. The book is all about his life, and in general, his complete lack of control over his childhood, adolescence, and career. About coming to his TRUTH and authenticity later in life.

Here’s a telling quote from Open, on Agassi being a rebel:

“They say I’m trying to change the game. In fact I’m trying to prevent the game from changing me. They call me a rebel, but I have no interest in being a rebel, I’m only conducting an everyday run of the mill teenage rebellion. Subtle distinctions, but important. At heart, I’m doing nothing more than being myself, and since I don’t know who that is, my attempts to figure it out are scattershot and awkward—and, of course, contradictory. I’m doing nothing more than what I did at the Bollettieri Academy. Bucking authority, experimenting with identity, sending a message to my father, thrashing against the lack of choice in my life. But I’m doing it on a grander stage.”

A dramatic part in the book is when Agassi essentially lies to the world about his “rocker” and rebellious hairdo, which essentially is a wig. At a very young age he is trying to come to terms with losing his hair. It’s a part of the cover up of his whole life. According to Agassi he “hates tennis.” Can you imagine that? If that’s the case, where and what is his TRUTH?

In reading the two books so far it seemed crystal clear to me that his 5th and 6th chakras where blocked. Here’s what Deborah King tells us about these two energy centers:

5th Chakra (Throat)

You’re not being completely truthful. You’re angry; you can’t be who you are. You may look polished and put together, but you feel like a scared child inside. SOLUTION: be authentic. When you can trust yourself to be truthful on the pages of your journal, you can trust yourself to be truthful in the world. Just watch how your whole body relaxes as you express your truth. You’ve given yourself permission to be you—to speak your mind, to give voice to the truth of who you are.

Agassi has done this in Open. A first and HUGE step toward energizing his 5th chakra and healing.

6th Chakra (Third Eye)

You lack higher wisdom for guidance and have no signs that you are on the right path. You’re not tapped in to your internal messages regarding purpose and direction nor visualizing positive or peaceful outcomes. You’re not putting self-interest aside and instead embracing the greater good for all.  SOLUTION:  Expressing the truth about who we are and what we really want is the key to peace and healthy living. Listening to ourselves and acknowledging what we really feel allows us to change what is not working and to live in a more meaningful, purposeful way.

Even more interesting is this ancient description (in the time of Plato) of the 6th chakra and it’s relation to the head, scalp and hair:

The brain is the center of rational thought, the Intellectual center. In both Homer and Plato the psuche (or genos) is considered the immortal part of the Soul. The physical substance corresponding to psuche was marrow (medulla), especially the cerebrospinal fluid of the brain and spine, but also in other parts of the body.

Scalp and facial hair were considered physical emanations of the psuche, and so the hair, scalp and chin were considered sacred.   This center corresponds to Chakra 6 (at the brow), called Ajna, which means “authority or command,” an appropriate name for the rational faculty, which Plato said “controls and restrains” the lower faculties; Onians calls it the Executive function.

Can you see how his loss of hair can be attributed to his feeling that he had no authority or command over his life, or that he had no control or restraint, hence his “rebel” image and actions? Quite extraordinary.

I’m not nearly finished with Agassi’s powerful autobiography, but what I know for sure so far is that he has healed; that writing Open was his “journal”… his pouring out of frustration and a work of art with which to finally reveal his authentic self. I highly recommend his book.

In general, healthy chakras are ones that are balanced and not blocked. With practice and awareness we can identify which ones may be blocked and begin to do the work that is necessary to bring them back in balance. For this knowledge, Deborah King’s book, Truth Heals,  is excellent. Here is the link to find it: http://bit.ly/fdKnu3.

Happy Anniversary to Me!!

November 19, 2010

Being En Pointe is 2 years old today!

YAY!!

Last night I was  doing homework with my children when the thought came to me… “My blog anniversary must be any day now!” Well, since you may know by now that I don’t believe in coincidences, my timing was perfect; to the day to be exact. And, the timing of things gets even better. Last night I also learned that I was accepted as an affiliate for Hay House, my most cherished publisher of all my gurus!

Since this past year’s theme has been all about reading empowering and thought-provoking books via my Relaxed Book Club, I invite you to continue on this path with me of making the time, even if it’s only one page a day, to read a quality book that allows for that oh-so-amazing aha moment! I just love them. Don’t you?

So, I invite you to peruse Hay House and all of its inspiring offerings. Maybe someone in your life needs a good book to lift their spirits?

I guarantee you’ll find one at Hay House.

(Note: for some reason I’m having trouble attaching links to images/words today, so here’s the link to Hay House:                     http://bit.ly/9EuwlC .)

My Relaxed Book Club will become even more relaxed as I retreat more deeply into my new selections (I already have about 6 of them!) and the new insights that I just know I will share with all of you at just the right time. In the meantime, I will use this very special anniversary to contemplate how I’ve been En Pointe this past “blogging year” and how I will renew my blog’s purpose to passionately thrust me forward for another wonderful year of reflecting, sharing and transforming.

Thanks for your eyes and hearts, and for any LOL moments you’ve experienced via Being En Pointe and my Relaxed Book Club. I hope you will keep coming back for more. 🙂

Keep reading… Monique

Ever feel like others don’t really see who you are? Ever feel like you don’t know yourself either? How strongly would you agree with the belief that you must “know thyself” in order to lead others? Would you agree that we must lead ourselves really well in order to lead others?

This week I have the pleasure of coaching women executives at our Women on the Move program. It’s a pleasure because I am surrounded by powerful female energy; transformative, healing energy. At this retreat we retreat within. We learn to get to know ourselves deeply and understand how appreciating and sharing our authentic selves with all those around us helps us to launch a transformation like no other.

So as women, in particular, where do we begin? For me it begins with awareness and trust…of the self.

It’s no coincidence that we refer to earth as “Mother Earth,” because it is a natural trait of women to nurture, protect, put others first, and many times, say “yes, yes, yes” to anything that will create life, despite exhaustion. It is in our nature to give birth!! In fact, the Tao Te Ching refers to this special female energy of creation in such a beautiful way:

“The spirit that never dies is called the mysterious feminine. Although she becomes the whole universe, her immaculate purity is never lost. Although she assumes countless forms, her true identity remains intact. The gateway to the mysterious female is called the root of creation. Listen to her voice, hear it echo through creation. Without fail, she reveals her presence. Without fail, she reveals her presence. Without fail, she brings us to our own perfection. Although it is invisible, it endures; it will never end.”

Wow. That’s powerful!

If you are eager for a transformation; if you are eager to share with the world your true nature; if you are eager to lead and inspire others to reach their authenticity and greatness….begin with you!

Ask yourself:

-What is the spirit within me that never dies?
-What about me and only me is pure and never lost?
-What do I LOVE to create?
-What would my voice say if I didn’t care about what others would think and say about me?
-What about me can others count on without fail?

If you don’t know the answers to these questions, take time away from the rat race, from spinning your wheels and operating from a place far away from your authentic self. Pause to understand that things don’t have to remain the same; that we don’t have to operate on automatic or on auto-pilot. In fact, we can come to know the power of operating on purpose, driving forward from our authentic self.

Imagine what this small step would do for you; for your life. Imagine how you would inspire others to do the same merely by modeling this powerful behavior.

Look in that mirror today. Instead of asking “Who am I?”, take the time to get familiar with the you Mother Earth created; with the you others are craving to experience.

Namaste,
Monique

Nance Guilmartin, a dear friend and mentor,  and author of Healing Conversations and The Power of Pause,  sent me a link  to a video that she thought I would appreciate. She was right.

This post, unlike my usual ones, will not contain many words or insights, because its power is simply in sharing this video. Nance shared it with me, and I feel deeply driven to do the same.

As I mentioned to Nance, I appreciated receiving it this week in particular as our world lost two men close to my family– one 26 and one 52. Too young and too soon.

Although I understand that some are called “home” sooner than others and find solace in this belief, I too understand that the loved ones very close to these two men may never be able to find the forgiveness in their hearts and release the pain necessary to move forward and lead powerful, meaningful, and passionate lives as they once had.

Many of us unnecessarily hold on to pain, conflict, and anger– in small or large bits– for too long. Letting go is not easy, but it is the answer.

Please forward this along. Post it to your profile. Share it widely.

You will, for sure, be paying it forward.

From my vantage point, it’s the best 10:42 minutes you’ll spend today.   🙂

In the spirit of forgiveness,

Monique

No, not again!

It’s quite ironic that I write this today, as I sit here feeling miserable with the beginnings of a yucky cold! But, I couldn’t help to discuss the “aha” moment I had recently after returning from a great trip to Memphis with my girlfriends (see previous blog below).

Prior to leaving to Memphis I was battling with a hard-core sinus infection that I was doing my very best to treat naturally. However, knowing that my trip could be dramatically affected by this infection, I broke down and purchased Extra Strength Sudafed for the trip.

Although I know that mind over matter helped to keep it under control during the trip (and I will give some credit to the Sudafed!), when I returned home I said to myself, “Ge’ez, I’m not sick any more!” I questioned further, “How is it possible that I left to Memphis with a terrible infection, rested little and utilized every bit of my available energy in Memphis, yet I came back healthier?” I didn’t have an answer, but I was happy with the result.

Later I read an article in O magazine which polled women to find out why they sometimes tear one another down. It listed the following (among other things):

Eighty-eight percent of the respondents reported feeling an undercurrent of negativity among females. That’s really sad, since we can be so good for one another. Research has proven that female-female relationships actually boost our immunity.

Aha! That was the answer I was seeking. My Memphis gals are no “Frenemies,” they are my soul sisters and are actually good for me, like a shot of Vitamin D! I love it.

Oddly enough (or not!), as I sit here sniffling I’m watching a segment on the Today Show about 5 Ways to Prevent a Cold.  According to the segment, women have stronger immune systems than men, but still get about three colds per year. Hmm, sounds pretty right on to me, based on my history.

So, what tips did they offer?

1. Take probiotics  daily, either via a supplement or 1 cup of yogurt a day

2. Take Vitamin D daily, especially during flu season; 1000 units per day

3. Drink 1-2 cups of Green Tea per day

4. Ge a Massage! (20 minutes will do the trick) to reduce levels of Cortisol (which break us down!)

5. Socialize with your friends! Women with a wide diverse social network (Health Psychology) have been found to get colds less frequently.

To view the full segment, click here.

Okay, so it’s confirmed folks, maybe the apple a day used to keep the doctor away, but perhaps a more memorable way to stay healthy and happy is to keep your friends close by!

My ladies, can you all move back home, please?! I think I need you around during flu season!

I’m back to bed with my green tea! I’ve checked off my yogurt and Vitamin D for today. I’m hoping the hubby will indulge me with a nice massage to do the trick!

Have a healthy week!

Monique

When my girlfriends and I decided on Memphis, TN, as the location of our 10th annual “Girl’s Weekend” I had no idea that I would be in awe, and mostly, that I would recite hometown hero, Elvis Presley’s famous line when thinking of this eclectic and energy-filled city… “Thank you. Thank you very much!”

I can’t recall not one resident of Memphis who didn’t ooze joy and kindness. Maybe it’s all of the trolley and horse carriage rides; the finger lickin’ Southern cookin’; or maybe it’s the whiskey and live Blues? All I know for sure, is there is something in the air that welcomes you to Memphis and makes you feel right at home.

After walking street after street of empty downtown offices, stores, restaurants and lofts, however, you clearly see how deeply affected the city is by the recent recession. Is it really over as the papers claim? Not according to Memphis streets. This bittersweet experience… full yet emptymagical yet powerless; vibrant yet dim…made us all feel like this trip was more important than the others. We were a part, if only for a few days, of offering a helping hand to a still challenged economy with so much to offer– a local musician a chance to shine, a chef a stage for his delectable creations, a “home free” man a chance to pretend he is the incarnate King of Rock. We walked, we danced, we dined (a lot!), we pampered ourselves. But our trip was more than just about us, it was an even exchange of much-needed mojo!

So, this is a simple and short blog to simply say “thanks,” to Elvis Presley for WOWing me again, to my childhood girlfriends for loving me, and to Memphis for inspiring me!

As the local Memphis Blue Plate Cafe published in its daily news paper menu:

“Every day should begin with a great breakfast and positive thoughts. The family of employees of The Blue Plate Cafe wants to provide you with both. Have a Great Day!”

So, on this morning I begin as they recommend, with some eggs, bacon, toast and coffee (Oh, but how I miss the biscuits, shrimp & grits!), and my vision of a cloud of positive energy and light surrounding the City of Memphis for being authentic, passionate, and welcoming.

Thank You, Memphis. Thank You, Very Much!

Rock on,

Monique
